EUDR 2026: Is Your Agricultural Supply Chain Ready?

With the EU Deforestation Regulation approaching, African exporters, cooperatives and agribusinesses need reliable farmer data, accurate farm mapping and transparent supply chains to maintain access to European markets.

The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) is set to apply from 30 December 2026 for large and medium-sized operators, followed by most micro and small operators on 30 June 2027.

For African exporters and producer organizations working with cocoa, coffee, palm oil, rubber and other covered commodities, the regulation presents both a challenge and an opportunity: meeting European buyers' requirements while building stronger, more transparent agricultural supply chains.

At Think! Data Services, we help organizations prepare through practical field data collection, digital farm mapping and our modular farmer data and compliance platform, Kuana Data.

What Does EUDR Mean for African Exporters and Cooperatives?

EUDR requires covered products entering the EU market to be deforestation-free, legally produced and subject to the required due diligence procedures.

A key requirement is the 31 December 2020 deforestation cutoff. Agricultural commodities must not originate from land deforested after that date.

Although the main legal obligations generally fall on businesses placing products on the EU market, African suppliers play an essential role in providing the information needed to demonstrate compliance.

European buyers may require suppliers to provide:

  • Farmer and supplier records: Who produced and supplied the commodities?

  • Farm geolocation: Where were they produced, including polygon boundaries for plots exceeding four hectares where required?

  • Deforestation information: Were the commodities produced on land that meets the deforestation-free requirements?

  • Supply-chain traceability: Can purchases and batches be linked to their production origins?

  • Supporting documentation: Is there evidence of legal production and information to support risk assessments?

For organizations managing hundreds or thousands of farmers, maintaining this information can be challenging, particularly when records are scattered across spreadsheets, paper registers and disconnected systems.

How Think! Data Services and Kuana Data Can Help

Preparing for EUDR requires more than collecting GPS coordinates. It requires reliable data systems connecting farmers, farms, transactions and compliance information.

Think! Data Services combines local implementation expertise with Kuana Data, our modular farmer data and compliance platform, to help organizations strengthen these processes.

1. Reliable Farmer Databases

Through Kuana Data's Farmer Registry, organizations can centralize farmer profiles, farm details and supplier relationships. Consistent farmer identifiers make it easier to connect records across mapping, purchasing, inspections and reporting.

2. Farm Mapping and Geolocation

We support field data collection and GIS-based farm mapping, helping organizations capture and manage farm coordinates and polygon boundaries.

Kuana Data links mapped plots to farmer records and organizes geographic information for deforestation assessments. Existing mapping data can also be assessed and integrated.

3. Traceability from Farm to Export

Kuana Data's Traceability module connects farmers and farms with purchasing records, aggregation points, product batches and supply-chain movements.

This helps cooperatives and exporters document product origins, track movements and provide traceability information to international buyers.

4. EUDR Risk Assessment and Documentation

Kuana Data's EUDR Compliance module helps organizations manage geolocation information, deforestation risk data and supporting documentation.

By bringing information together, organizations can identify data gaps, maintain records and better support their buyers' due diligence processes.

5. Practical Implementation and Support

Not every organization needs to start from zero or invest in a complex new system.

Think! Data Services supports data migration, system integration, field data collection workflows, configuration and training.

With Kuana Data's modular approach, organizations can start with essential capabilities such as farmer registration and mapping, then expand into traceability, compliance and sustainability management as their needs grow.

EUDR Readiness: Five Questions to Ask Your Organization

Before the regulation takes effect, agricultural suppliers working with European buyers should assess their readiness.

1. Do you have reliable farmer records?

Can you identify the farmers, farms and suppliers contributing to your supply chain?

2. Are your farms accurately mapped?

Do you have the required geolocation data and farm boundaries?

3. Can you assess deforestation risks?

Do you have the information needed to assess whether production areas meet the 31 December 2020 deforestation cutoff?

4. Can you trace products to their origins?

Can you connect purchasing records, aggregation activities and export batches to the relevant production plots?

5. Can you provide supporting evidence to buyers?

Are your records complete, accessible and organized to support due diligence requests?

If your organization cannot confidently answer these questions, now is the time to identify and address the gaps.

Beyond EUDR: Better Data, Stronger Supply Chains

Investing in farmer data management delivers benefits beyond regulatory preparation.

The same digital infrastructure can support Rainforest Alliance and Fairtrade certification, farmer engagement, internal inspections, child labour monitoring, sustainability reporting and improved relationships with international buyers.

Better data is not only about compliance. It is an investment in more efficient, transparent and resilient agricultural supply chains.
